March Has Arrived
With conference tournaments underway and some having already ended I reminisce on some of the greatest moments of March. I was home schooled, which had a perk unavailable to most public school kids. I could watch March Madness, even the early games. Granted I still had to get my school done, but home schooling had flexibility. I remember watching Monday Big East tournament games and seeing Western Kentucky hit a three at the buzzer to snatch a 102-100 OT victory from Drake. With the 2013 NCAA tournament a week away here are my top 11 NCAA moments. Each of these moments I remember exactly where I was when it happened and carry the essence of March Madness. Let's take a walk down memory lane.
My First Buzzer Beater to Memory
It's very hard to recollect a first memory, considering a working memory doesn't begin to develop until age 5. This probably isn't my first childhood memory but I remember watching this Drew Nicholas buzzer-beater and getting my first taste of the Madness of March
Throwback Thrillers
Part of my hatred for the Duke Blue Devils (as much as it pains me to say it) comes from respect. Growing up, Duke was always good. I grew up in a family of Clemson Tigers. I learned very quickly I did not like Duke, which makes this moment all the better.
This next buzzer beater features my favorite all time player name from March. Kevin Pittsnogle, a seven foot big man with a killer 3-point jumper. I'm not sure how he made it to college in one piece with that type of last name.
Mountaineer fans showed up to games with posters reading "You got Pittsnogled." Here's the 2006 shot by Texas' Kevin Paulino that sunk Pittsnogle in the Mountaineers.
Jordan Crawford, Tu Holloway and Kansas State's Clemente put on a late night show.
In the 2008 National Championship game Mario Chalmers hit was is now known as "The Shot Heard Round The World," to tie Memphis and send the game to overtime. (Shot at 1:52)
If The Shoe Fits
The Cinderella Story is another important element of March. Viewers who would not initially have an interest in the game suddenly find themselves cheering for the team who is not supposed to win. Here are some teams that stole the hearts of America and made their mark in college basketball history.
12 seed George Mason emerged from nowhere to defeat Michigan State, seed North Carolina, Wichita State and then pulled off the improbably with a 2 point victory over the #1 overall seeded Connecticut Huskies to make the Final 4.
VCU took over the 2011 tournament with a run to the Final Four. VCU was one of the last 4 into the tournament, but worked their way to the Elite Eight against #1 seed Kansas. VCU won 71-61 to advance to the Final Four where they faced Butler. Here is a look at their run to the Final 4.
VCU was defeated by Butler in the Final Four, which marked Butler's second straight trip to the National Championship. Butler is the greatest story of March in my memory, despite their shortcomings in the Title games. In 2011 Butler faced #1 seed Pittsburgh and came seconds from elimination. (The drama begins at 2:51)
Starry Eyed
The NCAA tournament is a platform, which allows players to establish themselves as stars in college basketball and up their NBA draft status. One player who in specific left fans stunned and starry eyed is Stephen Curry, who led Davidson to the Elite Eight in 2008.
The next player cemented his rise to stardom in a Sweet Sixteen matchup against the Duke Blue Devils. Derrick Williams led the 93-77 unraveling of the Duke Blue Devils.
A Comeback for the Ages
Probably my favorite memory of March Madness; Trailing by 17 points the #1 seeded Illionois fighting Illini mounted a comeback for the ages.
