MCOMM 226 Assignment

Girl Passes Away After Intaking Wrong Medicine; Foul Play Not Suspected.

A Rock Hill girl passed away Saturday morning after being given the wrong pain medicine.

7-year-old Tania Abondanzio received a tonsillectomy at Mercy hospital in Rock Hill South Carolina last Friday morning.

Following the surgery, the nurse prescribed Tania a half milligram of morphine sulfate, but was instead given half a milligram of hydromorphone, which is a much stronger pain reliever.

10 minutes after taking the pain reliever Tania began developed severe respiratory problems and had a seizure.

She was immediately transferred into intensive care and remained in a coma until Saturday morning when she passed away.

The death is being ruled as an accident.

The nurse in charge immediately reported to her supervisor after realizing her mistake.

Dr Irwin Greenhouse, hospital administrator released a statement about the incident.  "Our sympathy goes out to the family and we will stay close to them to provide support."

Tania's family was unavailable for comment.
