Eagles Soar in Win
over Bulldogs
The Winthrop Eagles defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 61-55 Wednesday night (infographic). Entering the game Winthrop had lost 5 of its
last six, most recently a 4 point road loss to the Campbell Camels. The game was defined by defense and stellar
guard play from the Eagles.
Eagles’ Point
Guard Andre Smith led the team in scoring with 14 points, while Kevin Hartley led
Gardner-Webb with 13.
Smith has been
criticized at times for his shoot-first nature as a guard.
When asked if it is difficult to
balance the two he admitted it can be tough at times. He said, “Sometimes I fall into the trap of
shooting bad shots, but for the most part I look to get other people shots
first.”
The Eagles led
early in the second half, but the lead was relinquished when Max Landis hit a
three, giving Gardner-Webb a 39-37 lead.
After a couple minutes of trading baskets, Chris Farmer who was red hot
for the Eagles, hit a three to give the Eagles a 44-41 lead that they would not
give back.
Farmer scored 13
points in 14 minutes and was 3-4 from beyond the arc. Over the course of the season he has shown
the capability to post big numbers
(11 vs Brevard and 15 vs. Auburn), but has been inconsistent.
When
asked about the inconsistency Farmer’s response was simple. He said, “I’ve just got to keep playing the
way I’ve always been playing, moving without the basketball. I just can’t make the game harder than it
needs to be.”
The
Eagles also had solid contributions in the paint outscoring the Bulldogs 18-6.
With
the win the Eagles improved to 8-10 (2-4), while Gardner Webb dropped to 10-10
(2-4)
